What the coworking?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, (‘sorry not sorry’ for the somewhat trite adage), you will have noticed that “coworking” spaces have been springing up all over the place. In big major cities like London and Manchester it’s getting hard to walk down a street without a co-working space popping into existence, and the phenomenon is starting to filter into small cities and towns too.
So what is a coworking space? Well the short answer is “a place for businesses and freelancers to work together”. The long answer is, it depends on the space as they’re all a little (or a lot) different. Some offer hot desks, where you’ll move round from day-to-day, pay by the hour or be able to select from a tier of different use packages, others offer huge 60 person offices and many have a mix of both. Many also have other services to offer, whether that’s in the form of onsite creative prototyping machines like The Making Rooms (that’s the only shameless plug, promise), or in the form of free beer on tap like the wildly popular WeWork.
So you may be asking yourself, why do people move their businesses into coworking spaces? Why not save money and work from home instead? Why would you travel any further than your living room table to work on your own business? While being able to work from the comfort of your own bed in your favourite pair of pyjamas may sound like a dream come true, it gets old very quickly – trust me.
I run a business in my spare time (my ‘side-hustle’ if you will), and even though my business partner and I can only spend a day or two a week on that business, we have found that working from home or coffee shops only gets you so far, and eventually we needed to find a space to call our own. This was for a whole host of reasons, from the time it takes to get all our stuff out to start work, to having a good work-life separation and having space to meet interesting new people.
So wherever you are and whatever you’re business does – have a look round some of your local coworking spaces and see if any of them get you in the mood to HUSTLE!
